There are days when that to-do list feels like a mountain, and motivation is nowhere to be found. But here are some tricks I’ve picked up over time that might help. And yes, I talk to myself! Who else are you with 24 hours per day?
- Kenisha, It’s Okay to Feel That Way: First and foremost, it’s totally okay to not feel like it sometimes. We all have those days. It doesn’t mean you’re any less productive or motivated in general. Besides, that’s how people operate! You do all things in life because you either feel like it, or you don’t!
- Slice it into Bite-Sized Chunks: When I’m facing a daunting task, I break it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. It makes the whole thing feel less overwhelming. Sometimes I need quick wins to get motivated.
- Lists, Lists, Lists: I’m a big fan of to-do lists. Writing things down can make them feel more concrete and less intimidating. I love the feeling of crossing something off of my list. So satisfying!
- Picture the Finish Line: Try to visualize how good it will feel once the task is done. Sometimes that’s all the motivation I need. To be honest, sometimes it’s not enough.
- Set a Time Limit: I tell myself, “Okay, Kenisha, just 15 minutes on this, and then you can take a break.” Once I start, I often find I want to keep going. Then, I feel like I am going the extra mile.
- Tame the Distractions: I’ve learned to identify my distractions (hello, smartphone and Asian TV lol!), and I put them away or turn them off when I need to focus. It’s harder than it sounds.
- Rally the Troops: If possible, I share my goal with a friend or family member who can gently nudge me along. Having someone to report to can be surprisingly motivating. Be accountable to yourself and someone else.
- Promise a Reward: It’s not bribery, it’s positive reinforcement! I treat myself to something enjoyable after I’ve finished. It’s like a little pat on the back. Ex. Asian TV again or Karaoke lol!
- Be Kind to Yourself: Some days, it’s just not going to happen. And that’s okay. We’re all human, and it’s alright to have an “off” day. Give yourself some GRACE!
- Take That First Step: Sometimes, all it takes is just starting. I tell myself, “Kenisha, just open that document and write one sentence.” Once I begin, it often gets easier.
I hope you’ve found some value in this article. If so, please share it with others so that they can learn how to just be sometimes.
