Death’s Sting Leaves Anxiety

Life has this uncanny way of unfolding in unexpected chapters, and lately, I’ve found myself in a season that’s no less than a rollercoaster of emotions. A season of death has swept through my personal circle, leaving me grappling with questions, fears, and a deep need for understanding. This season seemed to have set ablaze back in January 2016 when my grandfather passed. That seemed to be the catalyst for so many double-digit deaths to follow in my immediate circle. This was not TV! This was real life loss in a major way, even my one and only sibling was not safe! Ever since then I’ve been overcoming the anxiety that is associated with the sting of death, which ironically lead to gastric conditions and an endoscopy! So, let me help you before you get there.

Accepting the Unseen:
In the face of loss, it’s tempting to demand answers from the universe, from God. Why does pain exist, and why does it touch those we hold dear? Accepting the things of God that we do not understand is like learning to dance in the dark – it requires trust. I find solace in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” I admit that this is easier said than done. The pain will always want to have it’s way.

Fear of the Unknown:
As the waves of death crash around you, fear can become a companion you never invited. It’s natural to fear losing those we love, but when that fear begins to shape our daily lives, it becomes a prison. Personally, I’ve felt the weight of this fear, the anxiety that hinders me from embracing life’s joys. Psalm 23:4 speaks to this, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Trusting God’s presence in the midst of our fears is a powerful anchor. At that time, I didn’t even want to be quiet. I was afraid of what I would think about, ugh! So, I was busy 24/7 and when I laid down, CRASH! I allowed no time to lay and think before bed. I’m just being honest. I couldn’t turn my mind off! So, I had to give it something to do until it “Control, alt + deleted.”

Overcoming Dread:
Dread can cast a dark cloud over the most beautiful moments. The anticipation of tragedy can steal the joy from today. Romans 8:28 reminds me that “all things work together for good for those who love God.” Channeling that love into gratitude for the present moment helps dispel the dread of what might come. It’s about savoring the now, holding tight to the love that surrounds us.

Finding Joy in Life Again:
Rediscovering the joy of life amid grief is a journey. It involves small, intentional steps – stepping outside, trying new things, and embracing the beauty of travel. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds me that “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Embracing life doesn’t mean forgetting the pain; it’s a testament to resilience and the acknowledgment that joy and sorrow can coexist.

Seeking Comfort in Faith:
In this season, my faith has become a lifeline. Psalms 34:18 offers comfort, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Through prayer, meditation, and leaning into my faith community, I find strength to face the uncertainties and the courage to continue living fully.

So, here’s to navigating the shadows, to embracing the complexities of life, and to finding peace in the midst of the storm. Keep on keeping on family and friends!

With faith,
