The Truth About ‘Fake It Until You Make It’ Mentality

Let’s be real for a second: why are so many people putting on a front like everything’s perfect when we all know life can get messy? You scroll through social media and it’s all highlight reels, perfectly curated moments, and success stories. But when the curtains close, a lot of folks are struggling behind the scenes. So, what’s up with the facade?

Here’s the deal – we live in a society where vulnerability is often seen as a weakness. People are scared to admit they don’t have it all together because they don’t want to be judged, pitied, or worse, overlooked. There’s pressure to “keep up appearances” and act like life is smooth sailing even when it’s a full-on storm. The problem with that? It creates this unrealistic expectation that everyone should be thriving all the time. Spoiler alert: no one is.

Why the “Fake It Until You Make It” Mentality Isn’t a One-Size-Fits-All

We’ve all heard it: “Fake it until you make it.” Now, don’t get me wrong—it can be a useful mindset when you need a confidence boost or a push to step outside your comfort zone. But when it becomes a lifestyle, it starts to be a problem. Pretending you’re okay when you’re not isn’t helping anyone, least of all yourself.

Constantly faking it can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a whole lot of unnecessary stress. If you’re struggling, that doesn’t make you less capable or less worthy. It makes you human. We all go through phases where life feels chaotic or overwhelming, and that’s okay. What’s not okay is pretending you’re fine when you’re not, just to meet some unrealistic standard society has set.

It’s Okay Not to Be Okay

Here’s the thing: it’s okay not to have it all figured out. It’s okay to feel lost, confused, or even defeated at times. Admitting that things aren’t perfect doesn’t make you weak; it makes you honest. Being real about your situation is how you begin to figure out solutions. How can anyone offer you help, support, or advice if you’re acting like everything’s fine?

Not to mention, being vulnerable creates real connections with people. When you’re honest about your struggles, you give others the permission to be honest about theirs too. Suddenly, we’re not alone in our messiness—we’re figuring it out together. That’s real strength.

No Need for a Facade

The reality is that life is full of ups and downs. No one’s life is as perfect as they make it seem, and that’s totally fine. You don’t need to wear a facade to fit in. The more authentic you are about where you’re at, the more peace you’ll find in navigating your journey.

So, the next time you’re tempted to say, “I’m fine” when you’re anything but, pause. It’s okay not to be okay for a while. Embrace the process, be real, and don’t let the pressure to “fake it” steal your peace. Trust me, the journey to “making it” is a whole lot easier when you’re walking in truth.
