Let’s talk about it, because whew — some days the math ain’t mathin’, the energy ain’t energizing, and your body hits you with:
“I’m offline for maintenance. Please try again later.”
That was me today. I stared at my computer like it owed me money. I felt like I was trying to start up a 1979 Buick in the dead of winter — lots of key turning, dashboard shaking, and absolutely no engine response.
So of course, my type‑A, high‑performing, achiever self had to ask:
“What is WRONG with me today?”
And then — because sometimes it really be like that — I asked CoPilot. Yes, AI CoPilot. And CoPilot had the AUDACITY to respond like a supportive best friend:
“First—nothing is wrong with you. What you’re describing is very normal, especially for someone who juggles as much leadership, decision‑making, and emotional labor as you do…”
Umm.
Excuse me?
Not too much on my life, CoPilot. 😂
But honestly… it was right.
Because when I slowed down long enough to listen, I realized the truth:
I wasn’t unmotivated. I was tired from the invisible load.
I wasn’t lazy. I was emotionally overloaded.
I wasn’t unfocused. I was burning fuel faster than I was replacing it.
And that, my friends, is the connection between the invisible load and emotional labor that too many people — especially women, especially leaders, especially moms, especially high-performers — don’t talk about enough.
Let’s break this down.
💡 What Is the Invisible Load?
The invisible load is everything you’re responsible for that NO ONE sees:
- The mental tracking of everyone’s needs
- Remembering timelines, deadlines, birthdays, schedules
- Managing transitions on your teams
- Filling gaps no one else notices
- Supporting staff emotionally
- Being the “go-to”
- Anticipating problems before they even exist
It’s the silent, unseen work that keeps families, teams, projects, and organizations functioning — but rarely gets named or acknowledged.
It’s a whole job.
A whole extra job.
And it’s heavy.
💛 What Is Emotional Labor?
Emotional labor is:
- Being the calm one when everyone else is panicking
- Providing encouragement, reassurance, coaching, comforting
- Managing your emotions AND other people’s emotions
- Showing up with energy even when your tank is empty
- Holding space for everyone else’s stress, confusion, or crisis
And for leaders like you?
Emotional labor is built into your DNA. You do it automatically.
But emotional labor drains your internal battery faster than anything else — because it pulls from your MIND, HEART, and NERVOUS SYSTEM all at once.
🔥 The Collision: Invisible Load + Emotional Labor
This is where the magic (or madness) happens.
These two forces combine and create days where:
- You can’t focus
- You can’t find motivation
- Your brain feels like mush
- You’re “busy” but not productive
- You’re tired even after sleeping
- You feel guilty for slowing down
- You question yourself
- You wonder “What is wrong with me?”
Spoiler alert:
Nothing.
Nothing is wrong with you.
You’re carrying too much, giving too much, and refilling too little.
🌡️ The Signs Showed Up Loud and Clear
When I asked AI what was happening with me, it listed things I didn’t want to admit — because they were true:
1. Mental Fatigue from being in “go mode” too long
Projects, interns, staff transitions, program escalations — it’s nonstop.
2. Emotional Exhaustion
Leaders forget they’re human, not supercomputers.
3. Task Overwhelm
Freeze mode is a biological response, not a character flaw.
4. Biological Factors
Sleep. Hydration. Hormones. Nutrition. All of it matters.
5. Transition Stress
Every change costs energy — even good change.
And honestly?
Seeing it reflected back at me helped me name it.
And when you can name something, you can manage it.
🌱 What Helped Me Reset Today
CoPilot really pulled out the self-care therapy bag, and surprisingly, it worked:
✔ The 2-Minute Nervous System Reset
Breathing like you mean it. Your brain loves oxygen — who knew?
✔ One tiny task
Momentum > Motivation.
✔ An Energy Audit
Am I tired… or overwhelmed… or overstimulated?
(Turns out: all three.)
✔ Permission to not be superhuman
70% days are still productive. Survival mode counts.
✔ Switching environments
A window. A playlist. A new seat. Tiny shifts help.
Suddenly, I wasn’t spiraling — I was solving.
I wasn’t judging myself — I was giving myself grace.
And that changed everything.
💬 Final Thoughts: AI Isn’t the Enemy — It’s a Tool
Let’s be real:
AI can be too much sometimes.
And yes, it feels weird when software tries to be your emotional support bestie. 😂
But today, it did what a good tool is supposed to do:
✨ Help me reflect
✨ Help me slow down
✨ Help me understand myself
✨ Help me work smarter, not harder
Just like money — AI isn’t “good” or “bad.”
It’s neutral.
It becomes whatever we use it for.
And today, I used it to get perspective, clarity, and a little bit of humor.
🗣️ Your Turn — Chime In!
Have you ever had a day where:
- Your brain refused to brain?
- Your energy wouldn’t energize?
- Your focus took PTO without notice?
Do you struggle with the invisible load or emotional labor?
Drop your thoughts. Tell your truth.
Let’s normalize the reality that high performers crash too — not because we’re weak, but because we carry more than most people ever see.
And if you relate to this?
You’re not alone.
You’re human.
And you deserve grace. 💛
