If You’ve Ever Needed a Break From Your Break, Read This

Oh let me tell you this! I just came back from a much‑needed Spring Break. Or at least that’s what it was supposed to be.

I took the time off with intention. I needed to regain my mental clarity. I needed to recover some of my thought tolerance—the ability to think clearly, deeply, creatively… without my brain feeling like it’s buffering on low signal. I wanted that ahh feeling. You know the one. Refreshed. Rejuvenated. Ready to take on the world.

But here’s the truth.

Those five days went by like a thief in the night.

My body rested, yes. I slept. I unplugged physically. But my mind? My mind never clocked out. I ignored all 400 emails that came through my work inbox the entire week—and somehow that still wasn’t enough. I didn’t come back feeling renewed. I didn’t come back sharp. I didn’t come back inspired.

On the way home, I got an SOS call from work. And of course, I stepped in. Then I rolled straight into Easter weekend—still not quite “there,” and not in the way I would’ve normally spent it either. And as Easter came and went, Monday’s return to work haunted me. Even though I was working from home… which, if I’m honest, is what saved me.

So let’s talk about it.

Why are we like this?
Why can’t we just relax?
Why is it so hard to focus, gain clarity, stay on track—and when we finally try, why does it take so much energy just to get ready instead of simply staying ready?

Here’s the hard answer.

Because we are living—and leading—through changing times, while still expecting old systems (and old versions of ourselves) to hold.

Rest Isn’t the Same as Recovery

Time off doesn’t automatically equal restoration.

Rest is physical. Recovery is mental. Renewal is spiritual. And clarity? Clarity requires space, not just absence.

When your mind has been operating in survival mode—jumping from obligation to obligation, decision to decision, problem to problem—it doesn’t instantly power down just because the calendar says “vacation.” Your nervous system hasn’t caught up yet. Your thoughts are still sprinting. Your heart is still on alert.

That’s why ignoring emails didn’t bring peace. The noise wasn’t just external—it was internal.

You don’t need more time. You need a different relationship with time.

We’re Carrying Too Much, For Too Long

We are exhausted because we are holding responsibility without margin.

We are the ones people call when things break. We are the backups. The steady ones. The fixers. The thinkers. The planners.

So when we finally pause, there’s no soft landing—because our minds are still holding the weight of what’s waiting for us when we return.

And let’s be real: stepping away without addressing why things feel heavy only delays the realization. It doesn’t remove it.

Clarity Is Hard Because We’re Between Seasons

This is the part no one names enough.

It’s hard to focus and gain clarity when you are between versions of yourself.

You can feel it, can’t you?

Something is shifting. What used to work doesn’t fit the same. What you tolerated before now feels louder, heavier, more draining. Your capacity hasn’t decreased—you’ve just outgrown the unnecessary weight.

That’s why it takes so much energy to “get ready.”
Because you’re trying to prepare using tools designed for an old season.

Staying Ready Requires Alignment, Not Hustle

Here’s the shift:

Staying ready isn’t about grinding harder. It’s about living more aligned.

Aligned with your values.
With your capacity.
With what actually matters now, not five years ago.

Clarity doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from clearing space—mentally, emotionally, spiritually—to hear yourself think again.

Sometimes working from home helps not because of convenience, but because it removes performance. Less noise. Less interruption. Less pretending everything is fine when it’s not.

Preparing for Changing Times Means Listening Differently

This season isn’t calling for you to push. It’s calling for you to pay attention.

Pay attention to what drains you faster than it used to. Pay attention to where your peace disappears. Pay attention to what you no longer want to carry—just because you always have.

That awareness is clarity forming.

You’re not broken. You’re not lazy. You’re not ungrateful. You’re evolving.

And evolution is uncomfortable before it’s empowering.

So if time off didn’t fix it, that’s okay. It was never meant to.

The real work isn’t escaping life for a few days. It’s rebuilding it in a way that doesn’t require escape.

And that… takes honesty, courage, and a willingness to prepare differently for what’s ahead.
