Let’s get real for a minute. How many of us are quick to whip out our wallets for others but get all tight-fisted when it comes to treating ourselves? We don’t think twice about buying gifts for friends or treating family members to something nice, but when it’s our turn? Suddenly, we’re going through life-and-death reasoning, justifying why we don’t need that new pair of shoes or why we shouldn’t splurge on that spa day. Some of you are walking around with raggedy underwear on right now because you keeping shelving that purchase. Oops! I know I am not the only who have underwear older than their teenager, haha!
Listen, I’m the first to admit that I’ve been guilty of this. Seriously, buying something for myself feels like I’m preparing for a Supreme Court case. The internal debate is intense. Why? Because somewhere along the way, I picked up this belief that spending on myself is indulgent, even irresponsible. It’s that scarcity and lack mentality that got drilled into me growing up. You know, that voice that whispers, “You better save that money because who knows what tomorrow might bring? You know you have bills to pay”. We are even denying ourselves the little things in life.
And look, I get it. I’m not saying we should throw responsibility out the window. But what I’ve come to realize is that if I don’t start shifting my mindset to one of abundance and plenty, I’m going to shortchange myself for life. And I know I’m not alone in this. How many of you are doing the exact same thing?
We’re so quick to delay our own gratification, to the point where we forget that we’re worth it. We deserve to be treated just as nicely as we treat others. It’s not about being reckless; it’s about recognizing your worth and knowing that you deserve good things too. It’s about feeling deserving of more and trusting that God will provide.
So here’s the challenge: Next time you catch yourself making excuses not to treat yourself, stop. Celebrate yourself. Buy that thing, take that trip, indulge in that experience. Because you are worth it. It’s time to rewrite that old belief system and start living like you believe in abundance, not just for others, but for yourself too.
After all, if you can trust God to provide for everyone else, why not trust Him to provide for you too?
