Let me tell you something I’ve had to remind myself more than once:
You cannot win a game you’ve already taken yourself out of.
Read that again.
Because sometimes life will have you ready to sit ALL the way down.
You tried.
It didn’t work.
You studied.
You didn’t pass.
You launched the business.
The customers didn’t come.
You applied.
They told you no.
You prayed.
Nothing seemed to change.
You showed up for people who didn’t show up for you.
And after enough disappointments, setbacks, delays, rejections, and “Lord, now WHAT is this?” moments, sitting on the bench starts looking real comfortable.
But here’s the problem:
You Can’t Win From the Bench
The bench might be comfortable.
The bench might feel safe.
Nobody expects much from you on the bench. You don’t have to risk failing. You don’t have to worry about people criticizing your moves. You don’t have to wonder whether the shot is going in.
But you also can’t score from there.
At some point, you have to get back in the game.
And maybe you’re reading this thinking, But Kenisha, I HAVE been in the game. I’m tired.
Oh, I understand.
I’m not talking about pretending you’re not tired.
I’m not talking about ignoring disappointment.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t rest.
Rest is necessary. Quitting is different.
Sometimes you need to sit down, catch your breath, drink some water, regroup, talk to your Coach, and figure out your next play.
But don’t confuse a timeout with the end of the game.
Whew.
Somebody needed that.
Stop Letting One Bad Play Define the Whole Game
We have a tendency to turn moments into identities.
You failed at something, so suddenly you’re a failure.
You made a bad decision, so now you’re bad at making decisions.
Your business had a slow season, so you start questioning whether you’re supposed to be an entrepreneur.
You missed an opportunity, so you assume your opportunity is gone.
No.
That was a play. Not the whole game.
Even the best players miss shots.
They throw interceptions.
They strike out.
They make mistakes.
But champions don’t stand in the middle of the court staring at the scoreboard wondering why the last shot didn’t go in.
They get back on defense.
They adjust.
They learn.
And when the ball comes back around?
They shoot again.
Some of Your Greatest Wins May Come After Your Greatest Disappointments
This is the part we don’t always want to hear.
Sometimes the setback is developing something in you that success couldn’t.
Disappointment will teach you resilience.
Rejection will teach you confidence.
Failure will teach you strategy.
Waiting will teach you patience.
Starting over will teach you courage.
And being underestimated?
Baby, that’ll teach you how to stop needing everybody else’s validation.
Maybe you didn’t get what you wanted because there’s something you still need to learn.
Maybe you need another strategy.
Maybe you need more discipline.
Maybe you need different people around you.
Maybe you need to stop trying to force something God has been redirecting.
Or maybe…
it simply isn’t your time yet.
That doesn’t mean your time isn’t coming.
Don’t Watch Everybody Else’s Scoreboard
One of the quickest ways to bench yourself is to spend too much time watching somebody else’s game.
They’re getting promoted.
They’re buying the house.
They’re losing the weight.
Their business is growing.
They’re getting married.
They’re traveling.
They’re celebrating another milestone.
And here you are thinking:
Lord… what about me?
Listen.
Stay focused on your assignment.
Social media will have you comparing your behind-the-scenes struggle to somebody else’s highlight reel.
You don’t know how many shots they missed.
You don’t know how many times they cried.
You don’t know what they sacrificed.
You don’t know how many times they almost quit.
And honestly?
It’s none of your business.
Play YOUR game.
Run YOUR race.
Build YOUR life.
Trust YOUR process.
Follow the path God has for you.
The Score Can Change Quickly
Anybody who watches sports knows something important:
A game can look completely different in the fourth quarter.
A team can be down and still come back.
Momentum can shift.
One play can change everything.
That’s life too.
One phone call.
One connection.
One idea.
One opportunity.
One decision.
One introduction.
One YES after a hundred NOs.
And suddenly, the thing you’ve been working toward starts making sense.
That’s why you have to stay in position.
Because what happens if your opportunity finally shows up…
and you already left the game?
Get Back Up
Maybe you got hurt.
Get healed.
Maybe you got embarrassed.
Learn from it.
Maybe you failed.
Study the film.
Maybe somebody counted you out.
Let them.
Maybe you’re exhausted.
Rest.
But when you’re ready…
Get. Back. In. The. Game.
You still have something to contribute.
You still have ideas.
You still have gifts.
You still have purpose.
You still have people you haven’t met yet.
You still have rooms you haven’t walked into.
You still have businesses you haven’t built.
You still have lives you haven’t impacted.
And I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but your current situation is not necessarily the final score.
The Game Isn’t Over
I have learned that winning doesn’t always look like a trophy.
Sometimes winning is simply refusing to quit.
Sometimes winning is getting up one more time.
Sometimes winning is applying again.
Studying again.
Posting again.
Praying again.
Building again.
Believing again.
Trying again.
And sometimes the greatest victory is being able to look back at the version of yourself who almost gave up and say:
“Girl, I’m so glad you kept going.”
So take the timeout if you need it.
Catch your breath.
Wipe your tears.
Fix your crown.
Pray.
Recalculate.
Change the strategy.
Call a new play.
But don’t get too comfortable sitting on that bench.
Because there is still time on the clock.
There are still plays to be made.
There are still opportunities ahead of you.
And most importantly…
YOU ARE STILL IN THIS.
So get up.
Get focused.
Get back in position.
And stay in the game.
Because baby…
You Can’t Win From the Bench.
A Little Something to Take With You
Don’t let a temporary setback convince you to make a permanent decision about your future. Rest if you need to. Regroup if you have to. But don’t quit. Your next play could change the whole game.
Stay in the game. Your story isn’t finished yet. ❤️
